World Book Day!

Today is World Book Day, it is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading.

World Book Day is marked in more than 100 countries around the world and it sees both children and teachers all over the UK dress as their favourite characters.

It is the biggest celebration of its kind, and the main aim of it is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Book tokens will be given to children so they can purchase £1 books from a special selected list of titles. World Book Day will be distributing more than 14 million £1 book tokens to children, that’s almost one for every child/ young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland.

Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

In fact, there’s evidence to suggest that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.

Happy reading everyone!
