How to become a PE Supply Teacher

Schools contact Yorkshire Education for all their day to day, short and long-term staffing needs who in turn will contact and send in a suitably qualified and experienced PE teacher to meet the needs of the school for a pre-planned booking or staff sickness cover.

If you are looking for flexibility to work when you want to, whilst gaining a variety of experience at different schools, then being a supply teacher is great for you.

As the need for experienced PE teachers is increasing, we thought it would be good to highlight how to become a PE supply teacher.

What qualifications do I need to become a PE supply teacher? PE supply teachers should be fully qualified with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). On some occasions when people don’t have QTS, we can place them in schools as an unqualified teacher if they have experience elsewhere. For example, this maybe as a sports coach.

Before we can place you in schools, you must be registered with us. You only need to do this once. Full details of what documents you need will be emailed to you once you agree a date and time.

Registration involves an online or face to face interview with one of our experienced recruitment consultants where we explain how we work as an agency and check your documents.

What skills and experience will I need? A good PE supply teacher should be able to deliver the work which has been set whilst applying excellent behaviour management skills. PE supply teachers also need to be adaptable and flexible as plans can change last minute.

Experience in other areas such as running sports holiday clubs and afterschool clubs, will broaden your range of skills, making you more attractive to schools.

If you are a recently qualified PE Teacher, then working as a supply teacher will give you a range of experiences that will enhance your CV and improve opportunities of receiving long term positions. By accepting work at different schools, you build up relationships with more schools, so that as long-term openings come through, you are more likely to be successful.
