Schools contact Yorkshire Education for all their day to day, short and long-term staffing needs who in turn will contact and send in suitably qualified and experienced Science Teachers to meet the needs of the school for a pre-planned booking or staff sickness cover.

If you are looking for flexibility to work when you want to, whilst gaining a variety of experience at different schools, then being a supply teacher is great for you.

As the need for science teachers is increasing, we thought it would be good to highlight how to become a science supply teacher.

What qualifications do I need to become a science supply teacher?

Science supply teachers should be fully qualified with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

Before we can place you in schools, you must be registered with us. You only need to do this once. Full details of what documents you need will be emailed to you once you agree a date and time.

Registration involves an online video call, or face to face interview at our office with one of our experienced recruitment consultants where we explain how we work as an agency and check your documents.

What skills and experience will I need? A good science supply teacher should be able to deliver the work which has been set whilst applying excellent behaviour management skills. Science supply teachers also need to be adaptable and flexible as plans can change last minute.

Knowledge in specific science subject areas such as Chemistry, Physics and Biology make you more attractive to schools.

If you are a recently qualified Science Teacher, then working as a supply teacher will give you exposure to enhance your CV and improve opportunities of receiving long term positions. By accepting work at different schools, you build up relationships with more schools, so that as long-term openings come through, you are more likely to be successful.
